Paper Beads
Here's another way I recycle: using magazines and other colorful papers lying around to make paper beads! I'll offer some tips here for making your very own! 1. Find wonderful colorful paper scraps (please don't buy paper for the purpose of making paper beads! that defeats the purpose, silly!) 2. Cut the paper into isosceles triangles to get the shapes seen in the photos. I am very organic in my process, so I don't measure, use a straight edge, or a template. But if you work better that way, go for it! (don't be afraid to experiment with other shapes, either... there are many other ways to cut the paper to get interesting beads). I usually get 10-12 triangles from one page of a magazine. 3. Get yourself something round (like a dowel, knitting needle, etc.) to roll the paper onto. Some people are able to just roll the paper without a round object. Not me, though! 4. Smear some glue on the base of one of your triangles (I use watered-down elmer's or modge-podge), and use your fingers to smear it up and down the triangle on both sides (yes, it is a super messy process!). 5. Roll the paper onto your round object starting at the base of the triangle. Add glue as needed. 6. Prop it on something for drying. I use a box. 7. Slide your beads off of the dowel or needle or whatever it is that you used. 8. Add sealant if you like (I'm not telling what I use! That's my secret! But there are many options out there!)
