How to Dread Your Hair

My dreads will be 3 years old this coming March. I get lots of questions about how I got them and how I maintain them, so I thought I'd share a little bit of that here.

First of all, it really helps to have someone who can assist you with this process. One of my younger sisters had done her own and was wonderfully willing to help me with mine. Here's what we did:

1. About one week before my dread event:
I purchased a pre-dread kit, beeswax, and a bar of dread soap (for maintenance) from knottyboy

2. The night before my dread event:
I washed my hair with the soap provided in the pre-dread kit. Because my hair is very fine naturally, I braided it in tons of little braids while wet and kept them in all night.

3. Day of the dread event:
I undid all those little braids and had a big fro! Yay! My sister sectioned out my hair into areas that were about 1" in size (it all depends on how big/small you want your dreadies to be)

4. The actual dread event:
My sister took one section of hair at a time and back-combed (also known as teasing) with a metal flea comb (works *much* better than those plastic ones) while twisting the chunk of hair with her other hand. Tease, twist, tease, twist, tease twist, until the section of hair is a little baby dread. When she moved on to the next section of hair, I covered the newly-formed dread with beeswax. Yes, it's a sticky process.

5. Do that until you're done (mine took about 10 hours--that was with breaks and interruptions from a 2 year-old sister).

6. After the dread event:
I slept with my new babies in a pillow case to avoid getting fuzzies and lint stuck to them. They are very sticky with that wax in them. Avoid washing for *at least* a week. It's hard at first! I couldn't go more than a week myself.

Maintenance

The first three months were the worst. I wasn't used to not washing my hair on a daily basis, so it was very difficult. I did not need to re-apply any wax. When washing, it is important to rub the soap directly onto your scalp and use your fingernails to clean your scalp with the sudsy soap. The suds will trickle down your dreads and clean them good. Always use a dread soap. I really love knottyboy's bar soap. Palm-rolling is good for them in the beginning stages. I don't need to do much of that anymore. I now wash them about 1x/week, sometimes less. It's important to let them air dry, so I'm also careful during the winter to wash them during a day when I can stay inside. I noticed after the first few months my dreads got tighter and tighter, so I ended up crocheting some of them together to keep them the size I really wanted. I love that I don't have to spend time everyday doing my hair; it just is what it is!

I love my dreads and if you're thinking about doing them yourself, I say go for it! After you make it through those first 3 months, there is literally nothing you have to do them!

The first two photos show my dreads on the day of their birth. Others are subsequent times in their evolution.
