Eating Vegetarian
Most of the time when I tell people that I eat a 98% organic diet that is vegetarian and low in sugar, I get one of the following responses: "Really? Wow. What do you eat?" "I wish I could do that." "It must be so expensive." "How do you get your protein?" I could go on and on with what people have said, but the ones I listed above seem to be the most common. I'd like to address those in this intel. The "Really? Wow. What do you eat?" Response: Yes, really. And there's no 'wow' about it. I eat a lot of foods and have a very well-rounded diet. I won't go through every little detail of every food I buy each week, but here's a standard day in my life: Breakfast: 1/2 cup organic rolled oats with cinnamon and organic raisins Snack: Kashi granola bar Lunch: 4 egg whites (free-range, organic, vegetarian-fed), organic cheese, and hummus on 2 slices whole-grain organic toast Snack: Pure Protein Bar Dinner: Organic quinoa with a mix of organic grilled veggies, olives, and organic cheese Snack: Muscle Milk The "I wish I could do that" Response: You *can* do that! Anybody can! It's just making a decision to make the change and implementing it whole-heartedly into your lifestyle. If you say you *can't* do it, then you really don't *want* to. It takes a little work, research, and commitment, but it *can* be done! The "It must be so expensive" Response: Some items are more expensive, such as produce. But other items I'm able to buy in bulk, therefore resulting in a much lower price. I buy my rolled oats, quinoa, raisins, and pasta in bulk at the local health food store. It is CHEAP and basically evens itself out in the end. Actually, those protein bars and muscle milk are the most expensive items I purchase, and they're not part of the 98% organic majority of my diet! The "How do you get your protein" Response: Since I'm a vegetarian that eats cheese, yogurt, and egg whites, I have a couple more sources than strict vegans. But it's not hard as a vegan either! Quinoa, couscous, beans, legumes, nuts, granola, soymilk, Kashi Go Lean cereal, rolled oats, tofu, whole grain bread, and the list can go on and on. I eat anywhere between 100 and 120 grams of protein a day. It adds up quickly. And don't forget about the water!!! I fill up a 2.5 L bottle with H2O everyday and work to drink it all. Sure, I don't finish it everyday, but I'm striving in that direction! |
